Supplemental Essay Help
Support with the school-specific essays colleges require, including why-us, community, and short-answer prompts, with guides for the schools applicants apply to most.

What supplemental essays are
Many colleges ask for essays on top of the Common App personal statement. Prompts, word limits, and the number of essays vary by school and change from year to year, so applicants should confirm the current prompts on each college’s own website before they start. The 650-word limit applies only to the personal statement.
Common types of prompts
Most supplemental prompts fall into a few groups:
Why this college, or why this major
Community, background, or what the applicant would contribute
A short answer about an activity, interest, or idea
An open creative or intellectual prompt
Why-us essays
A why-us essay needs details that could apply to only one college: a specific course, a lab, a program, a tradition, or a student organization the applicant has researched. General praise for a college’s reputation does not tell the reader anything new. We help applicants find those details and connect them to their own interests.
Guides for specific colleges
We have written guides with the prompts, examples, and an approach for many of the colleges applicants apply to most. Some of the most-read guides cover UChicago, Boston University, NYU, Yale, MIT, Michigan, Princeton, Northwestern, Duke, and Brown.

How we work with applicants on it
We plan the supplements across the whole list, so overlapping prompts can share material without repeating the same essay. For each essay, we work through brainstorming, a draft, and written feedback. The applicant writes the essay.
See also the Common App personal statement and the college list and early decision guide, since early rounds set when the supplements are due.
What to Expect
In a free consultation, we review the applicant’s profile, goals, and school list. Supplemental essay work then follows three steps.

Plan the Prompts
We list every supplement on the applicant’s school list and find where material can be shared across prompts.
Brainstorm & Draft
For each essay, the applicant brainstorms and drafts. We return written feedback on content and fit.
Edit & Submit
We edit for clarity, length, and consistency, and check each essay against the current prompt.
A near-peer advisor on every application
Every applicant works closely with a near-peer advisor, a recent graduate of a top university who has been through the process. Before anything is submitted, it goes through review by our senior team. Meet our advisors, see where our students have been admitted on the results page, or read the FAQ.
